About Us

As one of Australia’s largest energy providers, we are proud of our purpose to lead and accelerate the clean energy transformation for all. We are also proud of our history and of the people who have built our energy capability over the decades, and for the role all our generation sites continue to play in ‘keeping Australia’s lights on’.

Mt Piper was originally built in the 1980s, then stored in near fully assembled state, before being commissioned in 1992 and 1993 (Units 2 and 1 respectively). While initially constructed as 660MW machines, both were upgraded to 700MW in 2009, with Unit one upgraded in 2023 to 730MW, using modern turbine technology, bringing the station total to 1430MW. Importantly, the minimum generation of these units has also been lowered to facilitate the modern requirements of lower minimum generation rates to better match the shape of renewables.

Apprentices - Mechanical or Electrical

We are excited to announce our Mt Piper Apprenticeship Program for 2026 commencing in December 2025! Are you ready to launch your career in the mechanical or electrical trades?

At Mt Piper Power Station, we’re offering exciting apprenticeship opportunities where you’ll gain real-world experience, guided by our team of highly skilled and supportive trades professionals. As an apprentice, you’ll benefit from a structured training program over a 4 year period that combines on-the-job learning with formal education delivered by Lithgow TAFE. This means you’ll build strong foundational knowledge while applying your skills in a practical, dynamic environment.

What are we looking for?

  • Completion of Year 12 or equivalent graduate
  • Motivated, driven, determined and resilient mindset
  • Ability to think outside the box
  • A technical aptitude which will be assessed during the process.
  • A commitment to undertake and complete formal training at TAFE.
  • Demonstrated safety awareness and practical aptitude.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic with a desire to succeed
