About the Role

As a strategic and experienced Senior Legal Counsel, you’ll be providing high-level legal advice and risk management across retail regulatory matters within our customer business units. In this pivotal role, you’ll play a key part in guiding the business through complex regulatory landscapes, while also supporting the resolution of breaches and enforcement issues. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Legal contact for the relevant Business Units supporting customer business unit
  • Provide proactive advise on retail regulatory matters at a senior level
  • Actively progress all matters, prioritise new matters, make judgement calls on escalation and ensure all decision makers are identified, briefed and consulted as appropriate throughout any matter.
  • Assist with the management and training of Legal Counsel roles where applicable.
  • Provide deep expertise (particularly for complex scenarios) in the provision of compliance advice and the investigation and determination of compliance issues with internal business stakeholders.
  • Assist with litigation and enforcement matters as required
  • Assist with managing the allocation of resources and skills between internal resources and external counsel and ongoing management of those resources to ensure consistent, cost-effective legal support.
  • Autonomously drive continual improvement in Legal and Governance by designing tools (such as precedents), adopting new technology and adapting current processes and policies, with particular attention to reducing cost and simplification.
  • Design and deliver training to business unit colleagues to build their knowledge and capability and reduce their reliance on Legal and Governance for lower risk or routine matters

How can you support the Clean Energy Transition

  • Degree in Law and a current practising certificate in Victoria.
  • 8+years post qualification experience in a reputable Australian law firm or in-house.
  • Experience giving advice in the energy retail regulatory environment or a similar heavily regulated consumer facing roles.
  • Experience in regulatory environments outside energy regulation.
  • Experience in roles interpreting and disseminating complex information to multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills and an ability to influence independent of hierarchy.
  • Ability to effectively manage change and negotiate the right outcomes for the business.
  • Attention to detail, proven analytical experience and problem-solving skills.
