About the role:

The energy industry is undergoing a radical transformation. As one of Australia’s largest generators and retailers of energy, we are stepping up to ‘light the way’ towards a cleaner future.

Reporting to the Head of Legal - Energy, we have an opportunity available for a Legal Counsel to join our Legal and Governance team where you will manage and support the day-to-day legal requirements and strategic projects for our Energy and Markets Business Units.

The team has a broad remit and you will have the opportunity to support on a range of work across our portfolio development activities, our existing generation and storage assets, and our wholesale market trading activities (electricity, gas, environmental products and carbon abatement), including:

  • New projects (the team is currently supporting the Tallawarra B OCGT plant; the Wooreen Battery Project; the Lake Lyell PHES Project; and the Mount Piper Battery Project, to name a few)
  • Design Supply and Install Contracts, Maintenance Contracts, Services Contracts, Works Contracts
  • Innovative offtake arrangements, including Energy Storage Services Agreements, Battery Storage Services Agreements, as well as Power Purchase Agreements (electricity and environmental products)
  • Ancillary services and network support agreements
  • A wide range of wholesale gas sale, storage and transportation agreements
  • Derivative contracts under the ISDA framework
  • Agreements for the sale and purchase of environmental products and a range of carbon abatement certificates
  • Regulatory changes (for example, the retailer reliability obligation, 5-minute settlement, prohibiting energy market misconduct laws)
  • Strategic C&I retail contracts and product development

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide proactive, commercial and solutions-focused legal advice
  • Able to manage competing priorities and deadlines while maintaining high quality work
  • Share knowledge and training with key clients and the Legal team
  • Maintain close working relationships with stakeholders

About You

You will come with a Law degree and current practicing certificate as well as relevant post-qualification legal experience with a reputable Australian law firm or large corporate with 2-4 years’ experience.

As our ideal candidate you will come with experience giving advice on some of the areas described above. You will have a can-do attitude and be keen to develop your capabilities across the energy sector. You will present with strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

In addition to your technical skills, you will be able to combine “big-picture” and strategic thinking with being detail focused and capable of spotting issues.
